Young rugby player becomes third to die at hotel pool in five years

A young rugby player tragically became the third person to die at a hotel swimming pool in Cyprus within just five years, after lifeguards failed to notice he had submerged during a family holiday. Ben Woods, 21, was found lifeless under the water by other swimmers at the King Evalthon Beach Hotel and Resort in Paphos, where he had been playing volleyball in July 2022.
An inquest into his death held in the UK revealed that the lifeguards were at the opposite end of the pool ‘distracted on their phones’, and no action was taken against the hotel by authorities despite an investigation revealing it did not have a licence to operate the swimming pool.
