UEFA clause explained as Chelsea could qualify for Champions League AND Europa League next season

Chelsea could have the choice of which European competition they’ll play in next season.
As things stand, the Blues are on course to qualify for the Champions League. They sit fifth in the Premier League table with two games remaining and have, according to Opta, a 56.3% chance of sealing a return to Europe’s premier club competition.
Furthermore, the reason for this clause is ‘to cover a team from one of Europe’s lower-ranked leagues winning the Conference League. If they take up their domestic UCL place in the qualifying rounds they wouldn’t be guaranteed to play in the UEL.
